Service Tip of the month

IT'S TIME TO GET BACK TO BASICS

Check your oil level

It is normal for engines to consume some oil during normal operation.

Your engine's oil level should be checked every second fuel fill up.

Be sure you are parked on a level surface, turn the engine off and allow the vehicle to rest for approximately 5 minutes. This gives the oil that was circulating in the engine, time to return to the oil pan. This way you will get an accurate reading on the dip stick. The lower hole on the dipstick indicates approximately 1 quart of oil needed. If oil is needed, do not overfill. The top hole on the dipstick is the full mark. Do not fill above this hole. Also, be careful not to burn yourself, as the dipstick and oil will be hot, if the engine has been running for a while.

Additional information may be found in your owner's manual.

CHECK YOUR OTHER VITAL FLUIDS

To help keep your Subaru happy and healthy, it is a good idea to check all of the other vital fluids such as, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid, coolant (antifreeze) and power steering fluid.

*The dipstick and all vital fluid containers under the hood have bright yellow caps.

CHECK YOUR TIRES

Get in the habit of regularly checking you vehicle's tire inflation pressure and also check for wear. Properly inflated tires can improve fuel mileage and tire life.

Happy Subaruing!

Find The Answers To Your Auto Service Questions

Like any aspect of our life, vehicle ownership comes with many questions and concerns. Your vehicle is a complex machine that requires multiple routine maintenance and repair issues to be performed. Whether all you know about your car is how to drive it, or you consider yourself an avid car person, you may find the answers to some of our frequently asked service questions helpful. Here are 10 of our most popular auto service FAQs.

What does routine maintenance usually involve?

Routine maintenance includes anything that your vehicle needs to have done on a regular basis. While this list varies depending on your vehicle, it will always have these four services on the list: oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations/alignments/changeovers, and battery checks. You should also add your state inspection onto that list, as well as frequent fluid checks.

How much does routine maintenance cost?

Costs for routine maintenance fluctuate depending on which maintenance issue you have. Most cost less than 100-dollars, but you can be certain that each one could potentially save you from spending thousands of dollars on a larger repair. And in most cases, when you buy a new vehicle, routine maintenance will be covered for your first few intervals.

Where to service my vehicle in Long Island?

If you live in the surrounding Long Island area, we recommend having your auto service performed at our Riverhead Bay Subaru dealership. Schedule your appointment today and we will help you with any auto repair or maintenance issue you may have.

When to service my Subaru?

Besides coming in for your routine maintenance, if you detect an issue, either by hearing a noise, feeling a difference in your Subaru's driving performance, or smelling something that doesn't quite smell right, we suggest scheduling an appointment with us. If any service lights illuminate, such as your oil light, check engine light, or brake light, it's also time to have our technicians take a look.

Why service my car's A/C?

Your A/C does more than just provide you with the cool air you enjoy during the summer months. It also filters any air coming in, helps with fuel-efficiency, and makes your heater keep the freezing temps at bay. If it stops working, fixing it will make your journey that much more enjoyable and will help you breathe better quality cabin air.

What's involved in an oil change?

Oil changes are one of the most necessary routine maintenance issues and are, in a sense, one of the simplest. Our technicians will drain your old oil, replace the oil filter, and fill it back up with brand-new oil. It's simple and quick, but will help keep your engine running smoothly.

How can I get my car's service history?

If you purchased your vehicle from Riverhead Bay Subaru, we can locate your car's service history within our data records, especially if you've had us perform your service since you bought it. If you received your vehicle from somewhere else, you will have to contact the dealer you purchased it from.

What service does my car need before winter?

Winter, especially here in New York, can be difficult and you should be prepared for whatever snow, ice, or freezing temperatures come your way. Learn how to prep your vehicle for winter and have us help you by scheduling an appointment. We can take care of any tire changes, battery inspections, brake checks, or blower motor replacements you may need.

Does my Subaru have a recall?

Sometimes mistakes happen and, in order to protect its drivers, the Subaru company will pull their vehicles off of the market or replace the malfunctioning parts. If you've heard of a recall and would like to check to see if your Subaru is one of the chosen models, we suggest using our vehicle recall tool to see if your vehicle qualifies.

What does this warning light mean on my Subaru?

Your Subaru vehicle comes with many bells and whistles. If you notice a strange light appear on your dashboard and you aren't sure what this new light means, browse through our warning light glossary to discover the answer. It may be something simple, like your windshield washer fluid is low, or it may be something more pertinent, like your power steering needs service.
