The 2025 Subaru Outback and 2025 Honda CR-V both have reputations for reliability, practicality, and comfort. But if you want a crossover that blends everyday versatility with real capability, the Outback is hard to beat. Here's a quick look at a few key areas in which the Outback pulls ahead.
Powertrain Options with Extra Punch
The Subaru Outback (182 horsepower, 176 pound-feet of torque) and Honda CR-V (190 hp, 179 lb-ft) are closely matched for base-level performance. However, Outback XT and Wilderness trims upgrade to a 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER® engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The CR-V's other option, a 204-horsepower hybrid, can't keep the pace. The Outback can also tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped, compared to just 1,500 in the CR-V.
Interior Comfort and Tech
Both models have roomy cabins with more than 75 cubic feet of max cargo capacity. However, the Outback gives passengers more room to stretch out, offering superior headroom and legroom in both rows.
In terms of infotainment technology, the Outback includes an 11.6-inch vertically oriented touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on all but the base trim. In contrast, the CR-V's largest available screen is only nine inches, which may feel small by today's standards.
Built for the Trails as Well as the Streets
Multi-terrain confidence is where the Outback really distinguishes itself. Every trim includes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, plus X-MODE® drive settings that optimize traction in snow, mud, or steep terrain. Ground clearance is a generous 8.7 inches—nearly two inches higher than the CR-V. The Outback takes things further with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, plus skid plates, all-terrain tires, protective cladding, and more. The Honda CR-V offers all-wheel drive as an option, but it doesn't come close to the Outback's abilities beyond the asphalt.
